Changing Databases in Kooboo CMS

The Kooboo architecture is very interesting. I like how they have tried to be consistent with ASP.NET MVC.

But I need to record these notes on how to change from the default XML database to the SQL Provider because the documentation is not exactly correct.

What I had to do is this:

1. Download and run the app in WebMatrix.
2. Log into the admin page at localhost:nnnn/Admin (where nnnn is your port number.)
3. Once inside the admin screen I was able to move the provider dll and config file as listed in the above link.
4. Edit the config file to use your SQL database and put the config and dll into your site's \bin directory.
5. Create a database in your SQL Server that matches your connection string.
6. Restart the site in WebMatrix. 
7. Add a new site.
1. This site will be the first site put into the SQL database.

Hope this helps someone else because that will be the only benefit of all the hours I spent on this problem.

The Internet of Everything and the Death of Mystery

I was just watching a commercial from Cisco in which they describe the the advantages they expect to come from the tags we will be affixing to the objects around us. They describe it as the things around is waking up and connecting to the internet.

My Ludite friends will soon be telling me how evil this development well be. I will answer them, remember when you used to lose things? I remember questions, but no one is so fond of questions that they wish search would go away. They told us it would kill mystery, and that it was only mystery that made life exciting and interesting. I remember mystery, but there is more, oh so much more to life.

This type of app from Autodesk used to cost $80 when it was only being sold to graphic arts students using expensive Wacom tablets. Now it is $4.99 in Google Play. Autodesk is probably making more money now to pay for further development.

Beyond Geek Chic 2

Every month I find something more to like about Discover Magazine. This post sheds light on a hopeful trend in our culture. I went and saw "The Avengers" just to understand it better. It made me think that perhaps we are all becoming more rational and evaluative. But then I saw the latest “Star Trek", where popular culture's most famous and archetypal rational thinker, Leonard Nemoy as Spock, implores us that our final cause is just a "leap of faith" (by our future self from another universe, or something). I like to think that our systems are helping people learn the value of values. But the machines will never be able to convey to us the meaning of our meaning especially if our elders keep repeating "just believe".

I believe we have a chance at a new discovery. With all our new understanding of how our values really do matter, and how they make our lives richer and more real, I think we have an opportunity that no previous generation has ever had.

We can see, and show, how our values encompass a range of meaning and purpose. We can see that our values, those things which we pursue, span a vast continuum, from the directions we point our eyes at any given moment (micro-gestures) to the long range plans we make on our project planning systems, to the mission statements we form with our lives. They allow us to convey the richness, realness, and meaning of our lives to each other and to future generations.

But the systems can't figure this out for us. We need people, individuals with vision, who can integrate these components into a unified view of our existence. We need philosophers after all.

Quantifying Values

Discover magazine editor in chief has a very insightful letter opening this month's edition. In it he explains how it's not just the geek chic that is moving our culture forward, but also our newfound and simplified methods of expressing quantities. Although he doesn't use the term I think it is clear that he is talking about the quantities of our values.
